After serving the center for the past six years, she has now left West Hawaii Community Health Center in order to open North Hawaii Women's Health up in Waimea, caring for Big Island women of all ages who prefer a specialist level of care for their women's reproductive health needs
Until recently, Dr. Higgins had been serving the Kailua-Kona community on the Big Island as their only Board Certified Ob/Gyn specialist on staff at West Hawaii Community Health Center.

Dr Higgins is currently a faculty member at Tufts University School of Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and has brought together her medical colleagues to make numerous trips to Haiti in order to train Haitian doctors how to screen for and treat cervical cancer.
Dr. Lonny Higgins graduated from Wellesley College in 1969 with a BA in Philosophy. She received her MD from Tufts University School of Medicine where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society. She completed her Ob/Gyn residency at Tufts University Affiliated Hospitals in Boston and became Board Certified and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 1985 after travelling and working in New Zealand and Guam.
Dr. Higgins then joined the faculty at the John A. Burns School of Medicine where she served as Assistant Director of Perinatal Services at Kapiolani Hospital for two years. During this time, Dr. Higgins and her husband co-founded Marimed Foundation, a non-profit organization, to help provide maternal and child health care services and education to the isolated atoll communities of the Marshall Islands.
After returning to Hawaii, Dr. Higgins went on to co-found Pali Women's Health Center in Kailua, Oahu where she practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for six years. Then, in 1996, Dr. Higgins moved to the Big Island to live on a farm with her husband, two grown children, a new baby, three horses, 70 sheep, two dogs, and a cat.
